Do What You Love in the Workplace! Take the Employer Love Test!

By Dr. Di Ann Sanchez, SHRM-SCP, SPHR

Every year in February, I write a blog on Love in the Workplace.  This year, I am focusing on you!  Are You Doing What You Love in the Workplace?

Warren Buffet has inspired business environments with his simplicity, kindness, generosity, business, and entrepreneurial mindset. Just how happy are you at your workplace? No matter how good things are in other parts of your life, such as family, social life, and relationships, work is a significant part of your life and not to be neglected. Warren Buffet states, “There comes a time when you should start doing what you want. Take a job that you love. You will jump out of bed in the morning.”  Since, for now, you have chosen to be in the job you are in, it is up to you for the time being to make the most of what you do. Of course, you can change your job or embark on a new career in the long term. But for now, you can love more of what you do. You deserve it.

The Employer Love Test.  If you cannot answer yes to 75% on this test, start looking for a job!

  1. Does your employer allow you to contribute to the bigger picture? Can you volunteer work to gain a way to contribute to society in general?
  2. Does your employer allow you to identify yourself with what you do? This stops you from enjoying what you do.
  3. Does your employer allow you to participate in life and work goals? Create a life list (long-term and short-term) to determine how work is incorporated into work priorities.
  4. Are you distracted by work worries? Are you able to stay in the moment? What are your life priorities, family, exercise, etc.?
  5. Does your employer clarify what is expected? The more you are, the better for you in the long term.
  6. Does your employer explain how to respond when you are faced with conflicting demands? Does your employer allow you to delegate?
  7. Does your employer allow you to have regular breaks? Mental exercise and eating breaks are critical to your well-being. Can you take the time to look for ways to energize yourself?
  8. Does your employer allow you to relax? No matter how demanding your job is, you must have a pleasant workplace. Have you learned to relax at your workplace?
  9. Does your employer make your workplace more pleasant? Are you allowed to review your day and how you have contributed? Do not participate in office negativity. Can you have more fun at work? Does your employer allow laughter and have a fun-oriented approach?
  10. Can you get motivated for the day? Does your work allow you to have a social life?
